Hear artists talk about how art transforms, with Abdul Abdullah and the Arts Health Network NSW/ACT and CREATE.

Join our creative workshop which highlights how arts practice brings about personal, social, political and systemic transformation and what this means for health and wellbeing. Make, listen, and talk with contemporary artist Abdul Abdullah, recently featured in the TV series Space 22.

In 2021 the Arts Health Network NSW/ACT, launched an online exhibition exploring the role the Arts play in the process of recovery, The Making Effect.

A year later, you’re invited to our guided artmaking workshop, The Making Effect II bringing together Abdul Abdullah and three leading arts in health practitioners. This in-person event will provide insights into arts and health by broadening the conversation about how contemporary art practices matter.

Through the act of making together, we will build our understanding of art making as a process for thinking about, and “doing” transformation.

This workshop is co-presented by Sydney Health Ethics (SHE), Arts Health Network NSW/ACT (AHNNA) and CREATE Centre (Creativity Research, Engaging the Arts and Transforming Education, Health and Wellbeing).

Abdul Abdullah is an Australian multi-disciplinary artist. As a self-described ‘outsider amongst outsiders’ with a post 9/11 mindset, his practice is primarily concerned with the experience of the ‘other’. Abdullah’s projects have engaged with different marginalized minority groups and he is particularly interested in the disjuncture between perception/projection of identity and the reality of lived experience. Identifying as a Muslim and having both Malay/Indonesian and convict/settler Australian heritage, Abdullah occupies a precarious space in the political discourse that puts him at odds with popular definitions. He sees himself as an artist working in the peripheries of a peripheral city, in a peripheral country, orbiting a world on the brink.
